Training the Trainer

This is a course that will give you the practical skills and guidance on how to deliver basic training courses and the opportunity to practice key techniques for the delivery of your own 'in house' training sessions to small groups of employees.

Course Content:-

  • Applying adult learning principles in developing and conducting training to increase training effectiveness.
  • Analysing learning requirements in terms of: statement of training need; training required; the learner; training content; timing issues; physical requirements.
  • Identifying and developing learning objectives that describe to learners what they will be able to do as a result of the training.
  • Outlining the training content. Actions the learner must perform and the knowledge required to perform in order to meet the learning objectives.
  • Selecting appropriate training methods including: case study; demonstration; group discussion; reading; structured exercise; and trainer presentation.
  • Developing and using training aids including how to prepare and use: videotape; hand-outs; flipcharts and the overhead projector.
  • Developing a training plan for use in conducting training. Using the five-step ROPES model of: Review, Overview, Presentation, Exercise and Summary.
  • The basic facilitation skills used in conducting training. These include: the trainer’s behaviours; observing the learners; listening skills; and questioning skills.
  • Three considerations in handling problem situations.
  • Practise training. Using all of the knowledge and skills learned during the workshop in the preparation and conducting of a training plan.
  • Using the training skills learned, back on the job. Identification of ways to transfer the newly acquired training skills to the participant’s work setting.

By the end of the course participants will be able to:-

  • Identify methods of training which are appropriate to the learning needs of the group.
  • Use the overhead/data projector and flipchart, and appreciate the characteristics of other media.
  • The basics of PowerPoint Presentations
  • Use questionnaire techniques to stimulate group participation.
  • Deal with common difficulties which arise in the delivery of training.

Who Will Benefit: This course is specifically aimed at those who have recently undertaken or will shortly undertake the role of direct trainer and who have little or no previous experience in this role. It is appropriate for those who will deliver short courses rather than for those involved in the instruction of operational procedures or manual skills for whom a training instructor course would be more appropriate.

The Benefits of Training

ILM

All forms of training present an opportunity to expand the knowledge and skills of employees, but many employers find that the cost of development by outside colleges or contractors rather expensive. Training cannot be delivered in small bite sized bits as a college will tend to run a course over several weeks on a given day each week which leads to employees missing out on work time while attending training sessions.

However, despite the potential drawbacks, training and development provides both the company as a whole and the individual employees with benefits that make the cost and time a worthwhile investment.

One way to capitalise on this investment is to appoint your own internal trainers who have an in-depth knowledge of the business and can take on the training role part time, this save both time and cost and is more manageable.

Our trainer training course will also form the foundation for learners to progress to PTTLS or the new Education & Training Standards.
